Beta-lactam and Fluoroquinolone Resistant Extraintestinal Escherichia coli from Broiler Chickens and Ducks: Public Health Threat

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a zoonotic bacterial pathogen commonly found in human, birds and animals. The widespread use of broad-spectrum beta-lactams for poultry treatment, has resulted the production extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) E. coli. In this study, we analyzed antimicrobial resistance pattern isolates from broiler chickens ducks with clinical colibacillosis, investigated presence beta-lactam (blaTEM, blaSHV, ampC, blaCTX-M) fluoroquinolone (qnrS qepA) genes using PCR. showed higher against beta-lactams: penicillin G ceftriaxone (97.5%), cephalexin (92.5%), ampicillin (77.5%), amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (62.5%), somewhat lower nalidixic (45%), ciprofloxacin (35%), norfloxacin (32.5%) group. Isolates considerable sensitivity to cefotaxime (65%) levofloxacin (55%). All tested carried blaTEM, blaSHV ampC genes, was associated phenotypic too. Although some intermediate fluoroquinolones, or only one agent class, qnrS (83.3%) been detected high frequency. blaCTX-M (27.87%) qepA (16.7%) lowest occurrence had only. these resistant serotypes pose potential threat industry, constitutes public health risk human consumers, slaughterhouse packing plant workers due dissemination serotypes.
